Am 25. April 1945 hatten sich der Rotarmist Alexander Silwaschko und der Amerikaner William Robertson an der Elbe die Hand gereicht. Diese Begegnung wurde zum ersten offiziellen Treffen beider Armeen erklärt und gilt als Symbol der gemeinsamen Anstrengungen der Alliierten.
Alljährlich treffen sich Vertreter der Friedensbewegung und verschiedener Parteien und Organisationen an diesem Tag und an diesem denkwürdigen Ort, um zu erinnern und vor allem auch vor einem neuen Krieg gegen Russland zu mahnen, denn die Gefahr war seit Kriegsende nie größer als heute. Im Rahmen der Antidefender-Aktionen, zu denen auch aufstehen Leipzig aufgerufen hatte, war in diesem Frühjahr eine bundesweite Friedensaktion in Torgau geplant, die leider wegen Corona ausfallen musste. Am 3.10. fand nun in Torgau eine kleinere Gedenkveranstaltung statt, an der sich auch aufstehen Leipzig und aufstehen Mittelsachsen beteiligten.
